UCT DEFENSE
Lubrication-free small and medium caliber weapon systems
UCT technology provides benefits to small and medium caliber weapons. UCT Defense has successfully converted several systems, including machine guns, rifles, pistols, and shotguns to lubrication-free systems. UCT Defense has also had promising results extending the life of small arms barrels and refurbishing medium caliber barrels.
Benefits to users:
- Reliability and maintainability are increased
- Extends Reliable performance in extreme environments part life
- Reduces cleaning and extends maintenance intervals
- Multiple lubricants for various environments not required
Provides real-world corrosion protection without oil
- Elimination of need for lubrication
- Multiple lubricants for various environments not required
- Reduce jamming, no lubrication to trap sand, dust, brass and other metal shavings
- Less environmental impact via elimination of lubrication use
- Ni3B coating reduces third body mechanical wear including abrasion and damage caused by sand
- Lower life cycle costs
- Longer operational life
- Lighter weight weapons
- Legacy alloys used for their surface properties may be replaced with lower-density, lighter-weight alloys
- Used weapons can be refurbished and returned to service.

Benefits to manufacturers:
- Environmental compliance costs associated with the UCT coating process are lower than those associated with legacy coatings such as hard chrome, anodizing, and parkerizing.
- Streamlines the manufacturing process by replacing multiple coatings with one
- The non-line-of-sight, electroless coating process provides total coverage and may not require final machining.
- Not an exotic material or process
- Repeatable, scalable, transferable technology
- UCT's Ni3B coatings can be applied to steel, aluminum alloys, and titanium alloys.
- Alloys historically used for their surface properties may be substituted with coated, lower cost alloys.
- A longer-lasting, more reliable weapon has a higher value.
Based on it's demonstrated success, UCT Defense is working collaboratively with Government, commercial, and law enforcement customers to make lubrication-free weapons the standard for the future.
UltraCemTM technical specs pertinent to armaments applications:
Hardness UltraCemTM as-plated (aluminum and other heat-sensitive alloys): 900-1000 Knoop UltraCemTM precipitation hardened (steel, titanium): 1200-1400 Knoop NanoCemTM as-plated (aluminum and other heat-sensitive alloys): 1350 Knoop NanoCemTM precipitation hardened (steel): 1800 Knoop
Friction Reduction Friction is reduced between dry parts sufficiently to consider the coating a permanent lubricant.
Wear Resistance Given equal test surface conditions, un-polished UltraCemTM lost 60% less coating than Hard Chrome, Cubic Boron Nitride, Titanium Nitride, and Electroless Nickel (1-3% phosphate) in the ASTM G65 Procedure B Dry Sand/Rubber Wheel abrasive wear test.
Damage Tolerance Columnar structure of coating allows deformation of substrate without loss of adhesion.
